Gamecity Impulse: Games for Political Action

Gamecity
April 15, 2026 5.00 pm – 6.00 pm
How can we connect game development and political activism? Find out more in our next Gamecity Impulse talk by Joost Vervoort.

Games offer players a safe space to experience complexity, explore ideas, and test their boundaries. They invite us to question and to imagine alternatives. And Games give us the freedom to explore why our actions can be meaningful. This is where political power begins.

In our next Gamecity Impulse, we want to take a closer look at games for political action and their meanings.

Meet our Speaker

Joost Vervoort is Associate Professor of Transformative Imagination at Utrecht University and Impact Director for the indie game All Will Rise. Joost has a long career of working on the imagination of better futures, and how such imaginations can impact society in the present, in the context of sustainability. For the last three years he has worked on All Will Rise, a game about taking a billionaire to court for the destruction of a river, with a team of veteran game designers. All Will Rise has a public demo and kickstarter out, and the game tries to connect commercial game design with radical politics and action.

He will give us an insight in his talk "The joy and magic of games for political action: building All Will Rise" about his experiences and learnings in creating a game for political action.

What is Gamecity Impulse?

Gamers are diverse: Around 2,2 billion people around the world play video games, coming from a multitude of ethnic and religious backgrounds, nationalities, genders and sexual identities, abilities, age and language groups. The communities that form around games and the teams that make the games aren't always as diverse. This has already sparked a host of discussions throughout the games industry and community. The German games industry has picked up on the topic, by starting the joint declaration “Hier spielt Vielfalt”, as well engaging in projects, discussions and initiatives as individual companies, associations and people.

As Gamecity Hamburg, we want to contribute to the important discourse by hosting talks and panel discussions on diversity-related topics in different fields of the games industry and gaming culture in our digital event series “Gamecity Impulse”. We hope to help raise awareness of, start discussions, provide food for thought as well as offer industry insights on ways to improve equality, diversity and inclusion.
