  • Independence Day: Resurgence – designing spaceships for a blockbuster

After a long-lasting collaboration with filmmakers and studios in Hollywood, the role of the Vienna-based Design studio WIDESHOT Entertainment within movie productions changed to something much bigger when received green-light for production. In this lecture Johannes Mücke will give some behind-the-scenes insight of a blockbuster film production and tell the story of how a small Design Studio came to design all the spaceships, the cities, the aliens, the sets, the title sequence and much more of Independence Day: Resurgence.

Johannes Mücke (Managing Director / Wideshot Entertainment)

13.00 - 14.30 Uhr

  • Pixelart: It‘s Hip to be Square!

In a world where software makes advances on a daily basis there is no way for true pixel animation other than plotting each coloured square one at a time. This process has not changed since the beginnings of the games industry and the task of doing so has probably excluded it entering into the world of „real“ animation.Technical or Creative restrictions force pixel pushers to take shortcuts not found in other animation. Impact, connection and communication of purpose require broader strokes with less content than that allowed in TV/film animation. The process is no less pure but sometimes perhaps more so. The shorthand of expression is paramount.

Simon Butler (Pixel Pusher / Head Dinosaur / Dinosaur Pie)

14.30 - 15.00 Uhr

  • Character Art: Sculpting for Video Games, Animation, and 3D Printing

Hector’s presentation will cover some basic information of his career trajectory and will delve showing some of the differences between projects for important aspects of production for 3D printing.

Hector Moran (Freelancer)

15.00 - 15.30 Uhr

  • Game Animation: Working Remotely

The past few years Carin has been working remotely for several different game developers, creating their rigs, animations and whenever possible implement the animation in the game herself. To make this work she had to overcome certain challenges. For instance managing the workload and maintaining good communication are very important. During the production of “Quantum Siege” (Armada Interactive) she was the only animator on the team, had a full-time job on the side and had to animate 48 different ingame characters with each their own personality.

During her talk she will touch subjects like: Importance of your network, Managing expectations from both sides, Time management, etc.

Carin Huurnink (Animator)

15.30 - 16.00 Uhr

  • From Triple A to Indie: Production-Friendly Cinematic and Gameplay Animation Workflows

Chris Wilson will be giving a detailed breakdown of his experience with developing production workflows for Cinematic and Gameplay Animation and how the knowledge gained from Triple A Development can still be applied to Independent Development. This will cover the entire production process, from Pre-Production through to Shipping. Examples will be given for each stage of production, with ideas on how to help keep the process on track and limit the amount of throw-away work. The examples will show efficient ways of tracking assets and animations, allowing visibility throughout the studio.

Chris Wilson Lead (Animator / No Code)

16.00 - 17.30 Uhr
